Interview with Philip Coole, Founder of Surgical Holdings: A Focus on Quality Reusable Instruments

Reusable surgical instruments play a crucial role in modern healthcare by reducing waste and supporting sustainable practices. At Surgical Holdings, we’ve embraced this challenge by focusing on the production of high-quality, reusable instruments that are not only durable but also cost-effective. With over 50 years of industry experience, we are committed to a circular economy approach – combining our manufacturing expertise with a robust repair and refurbishment service to extend the life of surgical instruments and support more sustainable healthcare.

In this Q&A, our founder, Philip Coole, shares insights into our innovative manufacturing processes, the importance of craftsmanship, and how we ensure the consistent quality of our instruments.

How many different reusable instrument ranges does Surgical Holdings offer?

At Surgical Holdings, we’re proud to offer around 5,000 different ranges of reusable surgical instruments. Quality is at the core of everything we do – each instrument is crafted to the highest standards, including ISO 7153 for stainless steel, ensuring durability and precision in every tool. By offering such a broad range, we’re able to support the diverse needs of surgeons across multiple disciplines, all while helping to reduce medical waste and support a circular economy. This ensures that our instruments are not only built to last but also part of a solution that benefits both healthcare and the environment.

What makes a surgical instrument truly high quality? Are there specific materials, craftsmanship techniques, or design elements that you consider essential?

Quality starts with a correctly researched pattern that meets the specific demands of surgical procedures. We use high-quality steel, carefully selected and precisely tempered to ensure durability and performance. But beyond materials, it’s the craftsmanship – each instrument is meticulously finished by our skilled craftsmen, who understand the delicate balance required for each tool. Their expertise ensures that every detail is perfect, making sure our instruments are not only reliable but also comfortable and effective for the surgeons who rely on them.

How does Surgical Holdings ensure consistency in the quality of its instruments, especially across different types and models?

Consistency is key. We maintain this by strictly adhering to patterns and drawings, ensuring every single instrument meets our exact design specifications, and are manufactured to the same high standard. This is crucial in healthcare where precision and dependability are essential for successful outcomes. Having personally observed many surgeries, I’ve gained a deep understanding of how instruments are used in real-world settings. This insight helps us continuously evaluate and refine our designs. We’re committed to maintaining the right weight and design for each tool, ensuring that surgeons find them familiar and reliable. Our goal is to provide instruments that not only meet high standards but also support the precise needs and intricacies of every procedure, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.

What are the key features that distinguish Surgical Holdings’ instruments from those of other manufacturers in the market?

We offer instruments that are both innovatively designed and exceptionally practical. We work closely with Sterile Services departments to understand the real-world needs for efficiency in reprocessing of devices and validation which other manufacturers may overlook. This close collaboration allows us to develop unique features so that we are better able to address specific challenges in the operating room. While some design elements, like our duo-finish, may be seen elsewhere, our focus on user feedback and practical solutions ensures that our instruments are not only top-notch in quality but also exceptionally reliable for everyday surgical needs.

Can you share more about any innovative technologies or designs that you’ve integrated into your instruments to improve functionality or durability?

Innovation is at the heart of what we do, starting with the right tools for each job. In fact, some of the machines we use are ones I’ve personally designed and built to ensure they meet our exacting standards. Beyond the technology, our team’s craftsmanship plays a crucial role. With years of training and hands-on experience, each member of our team brings a high level of skill. This combination of cutting-edge technology and expert craftsmanship ensures that every single instrument we produce is not only functional and durable but also crafted to the highest standards.

Among the range of instruments you offer, which ones are the most popular and why do you think these particular instruments stand out?

Our unique, high-quality instruments certainly make them popular. Our regular sellers cover most of the common general surgery instruments, such as needle holders, dissecting scissors and artery forceps. However, our British made Hip Surgery instruments have particularly stood out, due to us being able to accommodate varying pattern requirements for hospitals and delivery in a timely manner for crucial operations. Can you share more about the process of crafting a Surgical Holdings instrument, from concept to production? What steps are critical to achieving the level of quality you aim for?

Crafting an instrument begins with understanding market needs. We carefully research and design based on these insights, ensuring our instruments are developed to meet real-world demands. We keep a substantial stock of our most popular models to guarantee availability. Each instrument undergoes a detailed process, from initial design to final inspection by our qualified craftsmen. Our team meticulously checks every detail to uphold the highest quality standards for every instrument that passes through our factory. By continually refining our processes and maintaining adequate stock, we ensure that our instruments are reliable and excel in the operating room.

How do you incorporate feedback from surgeons and medical professionals into your product development process?

We believe that listening to surgeons and medical professionals is essential to creating the best instruments. We actively seek their feedback through educational podcasts and discussions on our media platforms. This valuable input guides our product development and design process. We also ensure that each instrument undergoes a thorough final inspection to meet both British and International standards. This approach helps us make instruments that truly meet the needs of those who use them.
