Leading the Way in Sustainable Surgical Solutions
In today’s healthcare landscape, the push for sustainability is not just a trend—it’s a necessity. As the world faces environmental challenges and the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions, the healthcare sector must also play its part in creating a greener future. At Surgical Holdings, we are proud to be a family-run British company leading the charge in sustainable medical device manufacturing and services, fully aligned with the NHS’s ambitious goal of achieving net zero by 2045.
Supporting Green Theatres with Sustainable Solutions
Our commitment to sustainability is deeply rooted in every aspect of our operations. From the products we manufacture to the services we provide, we are dedicated to supporting a circular economy and building a more resilient healthcare sector. Our reusable surgical instruments and rigid endoscopes are prime examples of this commitment. These high-quality products can be repaired and refurbished, significantly extending their lifecycle, reducing waste, and minimising the environmental impact.
In fact, the refurbishment of surgical instruments at Surgical Holdings can save up to 95% of the CO2 emissions compared to manufacturing new ones. Between January and July 2024 alone, we repaired approximately 16,000 devices, resulting in a carbon saving of 9,900 kg—equivalent to the annual CO2 usage of 1.5 domestic houses. This is sustainability through superior quality, and it’s just the beginning.
Investing in Superior Quality and Innovation
Quality is at the heart of everything we do. Surgical Holdings holds ISO 13485 accreditation and is working towards MDR accreditation to ensure the highest standards across our CE-marked product range. We understand that quality is not just about meeting standards—it’s about exceeding them, and providing healthcare professionals with instruments that are reliable, durable, and crafted to the highest specifications. Our ongoing investments in our repair departments underscore our commitment to innovation and excellence. Since 2020, we’ve doubled our building’s footprint, opened a new storage facility, and expanded our repair capabilities. Whether it’s general reusable instruments, orthopaedic specialised tools, or rigid endoscopes, our state-of-the-art facilities and skilled technicians ensure that every instrument we repair is restored to ‘as new’ condition, extending its life and maintaining its performance.
SMART Repair: The Sustainable and Cost-Effective Choice
Surgical Holdings’ SMART Repair service is designed with both sustainability and cost-effectiveness in mind. Rather than incurring spikes in costs as instruments reach the end of their lifecycle, our SMART Repair approach allows hospitals to have instruments repaired or replaced at a consistent price. This not only saves money but also reduces the frequency with which new instruments need to be purchased, further contributing to a circular economy.
Moreover, our award-winning technicians are trained in manufacturing, giving them a deeper understanding of the instruments they repair. This expertise translates into higher-quality repairs that ensure the longevity of each instrument, supporting the sustainability goals of healthcare providers while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.
A Proud British Manufacturer Committed to Local Impact
As a UK-based company, Surgical Holdings is not only reducing transport distances and associated emissions but also contributing to the local economy. Our production facilities in Southend manufacture a wide range of instruments, including our recently developed endoscope—the only UK-manufactured endoscope on the market. This local focus ensures that our clients receive the highest quality products and services without the delays and logistical challenges associated with overseas shipping. With over 50,000 reusable instruments and 16,000 repairs completed, we are making a tangible impact on the healthcare sector’s sustainability efforts.
Building a Resilient and Sustainable Future for Healthcare
At Surgical Holdings, our mission is clear: to support the NHS and healthcare providers worldwide in their journey towards a greener, more sustainable future. Through our commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability, we are helping to create a healthcare system that is not only more resilient but also more responsible. Together, we can drive the change needed to ensure that future generations inherit a healthier planet.
