Eye Squint (Strabismus) Instrument Set

We understand that ordering a new eye squint (strabismus) instrument set can often be confusing. Hospitals, surgical teams, and individual ophthalmic consultants may each have different preferences for the exact mix of tools, making it difficult to standardise a set. Drawing on our experience working closely with eye surgery units, we have put together an example list that reflects the most commonly used and trusted instruments for squint surgery. 

This set is designed to cover the critical needs of strabismus surgery. It includes fine scissors such as Stevens tenotomy scissors (curved/blunt) and Thomas strabismus scissors (straight and curved) for precise muscle dissection. The presence of Halstead mosquito forceps (straight and curved) and Crile forceps provides effective haemostasis, while Adson dissecting forceps (serrated and 1‑2 teeth) allow delicate tissue manipulation.

For eye‑specific work, the set includes Moorfields forceps, a delicate Castroviejo needle holder for microsutures, and Westcott scissors (curved, straight blunt, and straight sharp) to facilitate fine cutting. An eye speculum (wire Barraquer) ensures a stable surgical field, while Gillies skin hooks provide soft tissue retraction. A sickle knife offers alternative cutting geometry, and the Castroviejo calliper enables precise measurements.

Finally, to support muscle manipulation, the set includes a Graefe (strabismus) muscle hook, which is critical for accessing extraocular muscles safely. Every instrument is chosen for its micro-surgical precision, durability, and ergonomic design, helping surgeons perform effective, clean, and controlled squint procedures.
