Surgical Holdings work exclusively with coatings expert, Dr Alistair Kean (www.nikaworks.com). Dr Alistair Kean has been working with Surgical Holdings since 2009, investigating the potential for specialised coatings for surgical instruments. Alistair studied Applied Physics at The University of Strathclyde. He gained his Ph.D. in Physics at The University of St. Andrews in 1987. Following this he was a Research Fellow at The Cavendish Laboratories at The University of Cambridge and then both a Research Fellow and Lecturer at The Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering at The University of Glasgow. For several months in 1989 he applied for and was a shortlisted cosmonaut candidate for Project Juno on board Soyuz TM-12 mission to the Mir space station in 1992.
In 1992 he joined Sharp Laboratories of Europe Ltd. in Oxford where he managed The Advanced Optoelectronics Group. In 2000 he co-founded Kamelian Ltd. in Glasgow and Oxford which manufactured semiconductor optical amplifier systems. In 2004 he became Technical Director of Mantis Deposition Ltd. which specialised in the manufacture and supply of physical vapour deposition (PVD) systems. Whilst at Mantis he developed a technique for the generation and deposition of nanoparticles in vacuum.
In 2013 Alistair left Mantis to set up his own nanotechnology company, NikaWorks Ltd. NikaWorks provides nanotechnology consulting services as well as contract coatings. Customers include Johnson Matthey PLC and RSLSteeper Group.
Alistair has participated in and co-ordinated numerous grant funded projects including TSB & EU FP6&7. He has written around 20 patents and 100 scientific publications. He has also appeared on BBC Radio Four describing his work in nanotechnology.
